Applications to graduate schools, fellowships, grants, jobs, and other competitive programs often require each applicant to submit a short essay about their history, qualifications, goals, and purpose for applying. These essays are sometimes written in response to very specific questions or sometimes in response to a generic prompt. In both cases, this initial document plays an important role in your application process.

This workshop will familiarize you with the basic elements of each essay, and it will offer a constructive environment for you to start drafting your essay.

Students at any point in the writing process are invited to attend.  Undergraduates, graduate students, and non-native English speakers are all welcome.

Many multilingual/ESL students find writing essays in English a little challenging, especially when it comes to grammar and grammatical rules. In this interactive 50-minute workshop, we will cover some of the most common grammatical mistakes non-native speakers of English make in their writing assignments. Students are encouraged to bring their drafts and ask specific questions regarding grammatical rules and constructions that they want to work on in their essay.

If you need help with similar issues, you are welcome to attend the Writing Center’s monthly Open Grammar Lab! All levels of English are welcome.

Workshop: Writing Academic English – Formal Vocabulary

Friday, April 21, 2017
All workshops are in HBL, Level 1, EC-1 at 4:00pm

Adjusting to writing at the college and graduate level, especially in a different country can be very challenging. Often times, there are multiple ways in which to express an idea or argument, and the vocabulary used in academic writing is usually very different than the informal way used for peer-to-peer conversations. In this 50-minute interactive workshop, we will focus on formal vocabulary building exercises, with the aim of improving your academic writing skills.

If you need help with similar issues, you are welcome to attend the Writing Center’s Academic Writing Vocabulary workshop! All levels of English are welcome!
