Half-Day Writing Retreat

The Writing Center is offering half day writing retreats for UConn Graduate Students and Undergraduates with the Honors Program.

Two retreats will be held on Saturday, March 29 and April 19 from 12:00pm to 5:00pm EST at Homer Babbidge Library, Room 1102.

Writing Center retreats focus on providing accountability and support for participants to get their writing done. These sessions do not contain writing instruction, but instead offer a space to sit, concentrate, and write.

Our half day retreats emphasizes comradery, accessibility, and efficiency. A free lunch will be provided before our work session begins, and refreshments are provided through out the event.

This retreat relies on writing cycles that are structured on the pomodoro technique: writing for 50 minutes, and then taking a 10 minute break. Keep in mind that "writing" means more than putting words on page. You may wish to use that time to outline, organize materials, plan, or simply think about your project. The point is to be actively engaged during the 50-minute work period.

For the "Rest" portion of the writing cycle, I have noted recommendations on what you may choose to do during each one to help vary the experience and allow you to get a since of what kinds of activities put you in the mindset to keep writing.

While the writing cycles will act as structural guidelines for the retreat, following them is completely optional. What is most important is your attendance, solidarity, and effort.
